The SSH-1 and SSH-2 protocols require different private key formats, and a SSH-1 key can't be used for a SSH-2 connection (or vice versa). The ethernet link does not change state; server is reachable via ping; ssh connects flawlessly occasionally, then seemingly randomly does not connect or existing ssh session drops. The problem is not the IPCOP box, but something in XP SP3 that blocks WinSCP.

Ok, I have IPCop (a linux based server/router/proxy Operating system) installed on a gateway PC that regulates network traffic on my home network with default configurations. Please use the correct protocol. I just skipped that answer being sure it was on (see the blabla story). It was too simple: the sshd was not active!
