Connecting to a web server in the LAN (without the proxy then) with the same method worked. The convenient approach is to use the SSH "dynamic port forwarding" option -D, which sets up a SOCKS proxy. What's the difference between `su -` and `su --login`? Sorry. :) Proxies can be configured to allow only certain applications to pass through them, by filtering based on the "user-agent string" that an application tells to the proxy. It does work for Chrome or IE, if you set the Internet Options right.
