I've never had this problem and I read on the internet that it can me a ram thing of the comp. The way around this is to export a quicktime first (doesn't have to be self contained) and then open it in Compressor. Also note worthy is that adding the missing mpeg2 component to Quicktime causes FCP (at least versions 4.x) to pause, as if it is not responding, before finally opening. This resulted even though I chose the Quicktime option rather than the compress with Quicktime export option.
